"Mi Tio Hernán"
Semi-out Anibal Montes takes a huge risk and expresses their genderfluidity during the last week of school and pays the price- their parents disapprove of this and punish them by sending them off to their tio Hernán’s ranch for the summer to “masculinize” Aníbal. Wanting to please their parents and survive the summer with their estranged, macho tio, Aníbal pushes their gender down and joins their tio’s team of charros (Mexican horsemen). They realize that pretending to be someone else is a lot harder than they can imagine.
“Mi Tio Hernán” is a YA coming of age graphic novel about overcoming shame and being honest with yourself.
